BBQ Sloppy Joes

This is an easy and quick meal that I love to make when I don’t have anything good in the fridge.  All the ingredients except the meat are staples I keep around all the time.  In a pinch I can serve it on bread or homemade biscuits instead of the traditional buns.  I also like to use ground turkey for this since the BBQ flavor covers up the not-so-excellent flavor of the meat, and turkey is less expensive than beef.

Time: 20 minutes

Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. ground meat, usually beef
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons prepared mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

    All but the meat. Pretty simple ingredients, and all things I keep around.

    In a large frying pan, brown the ground meat.  Cook it fully.

    Cooked through.

    Meanwhile, in small bowl, or a large measuring cup, stir together the rest of the ingredients.  I like to measure my ketchup into the empty cup and then add the other ingredients spoon by spoon.  This saves me a rubber-spatula step.

    I stirred it together with my tablespoon, since it was already dirty. It makes a nice little sauce.

    Stir the sauce into the cooked meat and heat it through.  Serve immediately.

    This can be doubled or tripled to feed more people, or it can be frozen for a very quick meal later.  Just make sure you stir it well.
